Annelies
Middel was born in 1973 and grew up in the north of Holland. During
the last two years of secondary school, she studied the flute at the
Groningen Conservatory, but she quit in 1992. In the same year, she
was admitted to the Academy of Arts in Groningen.
Annelies studied painting
and photography and experimented with transitional forms between these
two fields. Her final project at the Academy of Arts consisted of a
collection of photographs, which was in line with this combination of
fields.
Since 1993 the portrait
is an important theme in her work. At the moment she creates portraits
that are 'fillable' in the sense that they can be concretized by the
viewer himself. Most of her work is painted in black, white and grey,
but more and more colors appear.
Annelies Middel lives
and works in the city of Groningen, The Netherlands, and part of the
year in the USA.
